Optician Opticians and lenses technicians are certified to work with contact lenses. They have to obtain a special training for this certification. Some of them work with ophthalmologists to fit the lenses.
Optometrist Doctors of optometry are optometry schools graduators. They examine eyes for vision and health problems; give out glasses and lenses prescriptions. They prescribe wide range of ophthalmic drugs.
Orthokeratology This is the procedure of changing the shape of cornea of the eye with the help of non-surgical metods. This change is achieved with the help of GP contact lens, which generate the right form of the cornea for better vision. But the benefits from this treatment are not constant. That’s why orthokeratological treatment should be repeated for better effect achieving.
Presbyopia Presbyopes are not able to read at close distance (these are older people mostly). They may wear reading glasses, or multifocal lenses or glasses.
PRK PRK stands for photorefractive keratectomy. It’s a surgery during which corneal tissue is removed with the help of laser. This method treats such problem as myopia.
Progressive addition lenses This type of lenses enables to see clearly at near, middle and far distances. The difference between bifocals (or trifocals) and progressive addition lenses is that the vision areas mix together – it’s their main advantage.
Pupil It’s the darkest area in the middle of the eye. A pupil is able to change its size in order to regulate the amount of light.
Refraction It’s a way to measure the level of visual acuity. Refractions are held by optometrists and ophthalmologists. After this procedure a doctor can decide whether a person needs prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
Refractive surgery This type of surgical procedure changes visual acuity. It’s held with the help of blade, waterjet or laser. LASIK is a type of refractive surgical procedure.
Retina It’s a tissue of the eye that acquires an image and changes it to electrical impulses carried by optic nerves to the brain.
Rewetting solution Solution for eyes moisturizing (if you wear contact lenses).
RGP contact lens The abbreviation stands for rigid gas permeable lens. The same as GP lenses.
RK Means “radial keratotomy”. It’s a surgery during which the small cuts are made in the cornea in a radial way in order to correct myopia by flattening of the cornea.
Saline solution It’s sterile salt solution, which is used for soft lenses and GP contact lenses rinsing.
Soft lens This type of lenses supports initial conveniences for people, who wear lenses for the first time. But they have to be replaced in some period of time. Soft lenses are made of gel-plastic and contain water.
Toric lens A type of contact lenses designed for astigmatism correcting.
Trifocal This type of contact lenses (spectacles) has three focal fields (reading lenses, a lens for distant viewing lenses, and a lens for middle-distance viewing).
Wetting solution This solution is applied on the contact lenses before placing it on eyes. It helps the contacts to adhere better.
