| Contact Lenses Types | 4. Extended wear contacts
Extended wear lenses are intended for long-term wear (from one night to 30 days wearing). This type of lenses is referred to soft contact lenses. They have the same characteristics as soft lenses: flexibility and oxygen permeability. Also some rigid gas permeable lenses are produced for overnight wear. It’s important for the eyes to have a rest between long-term wear. The length of each wear period is determined by ophthalmologist.
5. Orthokeratology contact lenses
These are specially designed rigid gas permeable (GPs) contacts for procedure of lens adjustment. This procedure is called Orthokeratology or Ortho-K and the purpose of it is changing the shape of eye cornea for better focusing of objects. This technique is used in nearsightedness treatment as usual.
The most widespread orthokeratology contact lenses are overnight Ortho-K lenses. There are also daytime Ortho-K lenses. Overnight lenses are to be applied for 8 hours in the night as usual. A person takes them off in the morning and is able to spend all day without glasses or contacts.
The results from Orthokeratology is temporary. The cornea of the eye will gain the shape, which it has before treatment in some time. That’s why orthokeratology contact lenses should be worn every night or on other certain prescribed program.
6. Contacts for eye decoration
This type of contact lenses is designed for showy semblance of the eyes. They are not intended for vision correcting. Such lenses are often called zero-powered, plano or non-corrective lenses. Decorative contacts change a color of the eye (e. g. a person with green eyes can easily change his or her eye color for brown). Or have unusual design and combination of colors, which makes the eyes look wild and queer.
It’s dangerous to buy decorative lenses from different stores, which don’t have license and specially trained sellers. Before buying this type of lenses you should consult your doctor or other eye specialist. He will check your eyes and will give you a detailed prescription with certain lens type and its characteristic. Buy the lenses in special optics stores or from an eye care specialist. Clean and disinfect your lenses as it’s said in the instructions. Don’t forget to visit your eye care specialist.
