| Soft Contact Lens | A special plastic polymer that combines with water is used for making soft lenses. This water lets oxygen to pass through the lens and in this way it is more comfortable for the wearer to use contacts. UV protection is offered by some soft lenses. Soft lenses are used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and some degrees of astigmatism. Soft lenses may also be prescribed when the patient has cataract surgery for vision correction. This use of soft lenses is much less common because the intraocular lens implant has been discovered and nowadays it is widely used. The intraocular lens implant is an artificial lens that replaces the cloudy natural lens removed during cataract surgery.
Thanks to that many soft contacts are disposable, the risk of infection is reduced. It is very convenient to throw them away at the end of each day; you do not have to worry about cleaning them. No doubt, soft lenses are more comfortable than hard lenses; but they are more fragile than hard lenses, there is a problem. It’s very easy to rip or tear them. Besides they easily absorb substances like soap from your hands. When this happens eye irritation can be caused. Daily disposable contact lenses are the most frequently used type of soft lens. The intention of these contacts you can understand from the name: a person wears daily disposable contact lenses for a day and then throws them away before going to sleep in the evening.
Soft lenses can be made thick or thin, it depends on what the patient needs. To allow a sufficient amount of oxygen to pass through to the eye and as a result to permit long wearing periods such lenses are made very thin or they contain a lot of water. These contacts are called extended wear lenses. You can wear them for days at a time without changing or removing from the eye. As a matter of fact, such a prolonged use without removing them at the night can increase a risk of serious corneal infection. Daily wear use of these soft lenses doesn’t increase the risk of infection over lenses specifically designed for daily wear. Silicon extended wear disposable contact lenses is an also popular soft lens. They can be worn for nearly thirty days and nights.
