Children in America apply a computer from one to three hours per day. 90% of children of a school age use computer as much as they want. Excessive computer use can lead to early myopia and influence the children’s vision well. 25% to 30% of children who apply computer are recommended to wear corrective eyewear for safe and comfortable work at the computer. Nowadays more first-graders suffer from myopia. A child who spends much time in front of a computer monitor suffers from stress, because of excessive focusing of vision. Nowadays children spend much more time working or playing on a computer than children in the past. With the age the visual system becomes stronger and can better adjust to the stress from a computer.
Children can not limit their access to the computer, because they are not aware of the danger made from the computer. They usually spend much time before the computer and have little rest. Children do not understand when their vision gets worse. Their parents should limit the time spend by them before a computer monitor. Most computer workstations are not adjusted for children and playing on them alters the viewing angle. It is advised for the children to look at the monitor located in a slightly downward position, at a 15-degree angle. Be sure that your child feels the floor with your feet. An uncomfortable position can lead to neck, shoulder and/or back pain.
Children should follow the next recommendations to prevent Computer Vision Syndrome: 1. Every first-grader should have his eyes carefully examined; the eye examination contains near-point (computer and reading) and distance testing. 2. Workstations are necessary to be adjusted for a child’s vision. 3. Be sure that the distance between the monitor and the eye for children is 18-28 inches. If the distance is less, children can observe excessive straining and stress on your eyes. 4. If children have as eye redness, frequent rubbing of the eyes, head turns and other unusual postures, or complaints of blurriness or eye fatigue, they should not use the computer for some time in order to avoid discomfort. 5. Frequent child's eyes examination by a computer vision specialist is necessary. Get to know that computer eyeglasses are necessary to lessen vision problems and eye fatigue.
