| Color Blindness | Color blindness is not blindness, it is a lack of seeing colors. Color blinded people can not distinguish red and green or blue and yellow colors. The most widespread color blindness is red-green color deficiency; a less usual form is blue-yellow color deficiency. Such problem can be born, it is more usual among men than women.
The Symptoms and Signs of Color Blindness are: the difficulty with distinguishing of red and green, or blue and yellow colors. Sometimes a color-blind person sees only in neutral colors or shades of gray. At hospital the severity and type of color deficiency will be determined. Sometimes color perception is normal, but many dots are available. People who have red-green deficiency cannot distinguish between the red and the green. Color blindness happens when some cells in the retina responsible for color do not work properly. The cause of color blindness is a common X-linked recessive gene. Color-blinded people have parents are are also color-blinded or have the color-deficient gene. Color-blind fathers pass the gene to their daughters only. When the vision of their mothers is normal, their children’s vision will be normal too. Total color blindness can be caused with age or some illnesses that damage retinal cells.
Color blindness cannot be treated. People who suffer from it should consult an ortalphomologist. However, if you have difficulty distinguishing colors, or you've observed this difficulty in your child, see your eyecare practitioner. Color blind people cannot perform all everyday activities, for example to distinguish traffic lights. Drivers who do not distinguish red from green can still recognize the order of colors on traffic lights. Color-vision deficiency diagnosed in early childhood may prevent learning problems during the school years, because the process of learning is based mainly on color perception. It is recommended to inform the teachers of your child about his or her problem. The teachers will make the process of learning for such people easier.
The problem of color blindness can be solved with special lenses, filters found in either contact lens or eyeglass lens form. They can be bought only from some eyecare practitioners. If you suffer from color blindness, ask friends or family members to choose you clothes, remember the order of things rather than their color (the red light is found at the top of a traffic light). Learn how to live with an inability to distinguish colors.
