Dry Eye Syndrome

dry_eyes_syndromeDry eye syndrome is observed when eyes do not get enough lubrication, so they become dry. Another cause is the absence of a chemical substance that prevents the tears to evaporate as quickly as possible. Tears play an important function for eyes, because they are responsible for the removal of dust and debris and the moisture of eyes. Tears have also such components as enzymes that excellently neutralize the microorganisms available in the eye.

The eye depends on the flow of tears to provide constant moisture and lubrication to maintain vision and comfort. Tears have in their content three layers produced by various parts of the eye. They are the outer, oily, lipid layer; the middle, watery, lacrimal layer; and the inner, mucous or mucin layer. If something is wrong with any of these layers, dry eye syndrom can appear. Tears consist of components produced by special glands situated around the eye such as water necessary for moisture; oils necessary for lubrication; mucus required for even spreading; and antibodies and special proteins that provide resistance to infection. In the case of an imbalance in these components, a dry eye syndrom appears. Such syndrom is also available in the case of watery eyes caused by a lack of lubrication. The eye feels discomfort caused by dryness and demands more lubrication. Thus, tears appear in eyes. Unfortunately, such tears cannot lubricate; they can only wash debris away. If you have watery eyes, you should begin treatment as quickly as possible.
The dryness of eyes can lead to subtle but constant irritation and ocular inflammation of the anterior (front) tissues of the eye.

Dry Eye Syndrome Signs are persistent dryness, scratching and burning in eyes.  The doctor may measure in some cases the amount of tears in your eyes. One of the ways of measurement can be done with a thin strip of filter paper put at the edge of the eye. Such measurement is called a Schirmer test. If you observe such symptoms, you have such syndrome.

One of the signs is also a "foreign body sensation," the feeling that some foreign body is available in the eye. In some cases people with watery eyes suffer from dry eye syndrome. The dryness is caused with overstimulated production of the watery component of your eye's tears.
You can observe such unpleasant symptoms as:
    * Pain
    * Light sensitivity
    * A gritty sensation
    * A feeling of a foreign body or sand in the eye
    * Itching
    * Redness
    * Blurring of vision
    * Blinking can also be possible.

Among high-risk factors for Chronic Dry Eye (CDE) there are:
• Hormonal changes (that appear as a result of age and menopause)
• Medical conditions (eg., diabetes)
• Autoimmune disease (eg., Sjogren's Syndrome).

The problem of dry eyes can be partially solved with panoptx sunglasses that protect from wind, pollen, and dust. Artificial tears and other eye drops will be also very helpful.
The problem of dry eyes can be partially solved also with salmon (it has many omega-3 fatty acids), sardine, herring, and cod liver oils.
