Computer eyestrain is a common problem connected with vision. The symptom of computer vision syndrome (CVS) can be easily lessened. For this purpose one should:
1. Have your eyes regularly examined. You should have your eyes examined before you begin to work on a computer and then every year.
2. You should lighten your working place properly. The cause of eyestrain is a very bright light entered from outside and inside. During the work on a computer you should lessen the lightening of your working space. Avoid exterior light; remove drapes, shades, or blinds. If you apply fewer light bulbs or fluorescent tubes, or lower intensity bulbs and tubes, you’ll lessen interior lighting. It is recommended to place your monitor to have windows turned to the side of it, instead of in front or back.
3. You should lessen glare. The cause of eyestrain can be glare on walls and finished surfaces and reflections on the computer monitor. To avoid glare you should install an anti-glare screen on your monitor and have bright white walls painted with a darker color performed with a matte finish. It is recommended to prevent the entry of light from outside; sometimes a computer hood can be applied. An anti-reflective coating on your glasses can be used against glare and reflections on the back side of your lenses from reaching your eyes.
4. You should adjust the brightness of your computer monitor. You can regulate the brightness of your computer monitor with the buttons on the monitor. When the white background of a web page is very light, it means that the brightness is too high. If it is dull and gray, it means that it is very dark. It is recommended to adjust also the text size and color.
5. Regular eye exercises and stretching is healthy. It is recommended to have a rest from the computer monitor every 30 minutes, and focus for 5-10 seconds on an object situated at a big distance. To have a rest you should look at an object for 10-15 seconds and then look at something else for 10-15 seconds. Such exercises with the frequency of 10 times make your vision better and are excellent for stretching of your focusing muscles.
6. It is recommended to rest from computer frequenly. You should have a 10-minute break every hour to lessen eyestrain problems. If you spend in front of their display for more than an hour, you should rest more. If there is a necessity to rest more, you may suffer from computer vision syndrome. Be sure that your desk lamp is not reflected on the monitor or shined in your eyes.
7. You should have a properly adjusted workstation. Frequent looking back and forth between a printed page and a computer monitor leads to eyestrain. You should locate written pages on a copy stand adjacent to the monitor. The copy stand should be provided with a good light, apply for this purpose a desk lamp. Be sure that it doesn't shine into your eyes or onto the computer monitor. Be sure that your chair is neither low nor tall. Ergonomic furniture can be applied for proper monitor locations and posture.
8. You should make exercises while sitting too. You may stand up, move about, or exercise your arms, legs, back, neck, and shoulders often. Stretching and joint rotating exercises can also be used.
