| Photophobia Causes | Photophobia (also light sensitivity) appears when a large amount of light gets to the eye leading to a reflex aversion to light, discomfort or pain. In the case of damaged eye, corneal abrasion and retinal damage a pupil(s) looses its ability to constrict normally. People who have lighter-colored eyes, cataracts and constant migraine headaches are more prone to sensitivity to bright light. Photophobia is common in the case of albinism, total color deficiency (people can see only in shades of gray), botulism, rabies, mercury poisoning, conjunctivitis, keratitis and iritis. Some rare illnesses, for example, the genetic disorder keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD), can also lead to photophobia. Such medications as amphetamines, atropine, cocaine, cyclopentolate, idoxuridine, phenylephrine, scopolamine, trifluridine, tropicamide, and vidarabine, belladonna, furosemide, quinine, tetracycline and doxycycline can lead to photophobia observed as a side effect too.
It can also be caused with some various medical conditions, connected with the eye, the nervous system and other illnesses. Among them there are: • Meningitis • Eye illness, injury, or infection such as chalazion, episcleritis, glaucoma, keratoconus • Albinism • Burns to the eye • Usual migraine headache • Encephalitis • Conjunctivitis • Aphakia • Corneal abrasion • Corneal ulcer • Cataracts • Retinal detachment • Chiari malformation • Cystinosis • Anticholinergic drugs may cause photophobia by paralyzing the iris sphincter muscle. • Hangover • Chikungunya • Sunburn • Refractive surgery • Contact lens irritations • Uveitis (inflammation inside eye) • Excessive wearing of contact lenses, or wearing badly fitted contact lenses • Burns to the eye • Acute iritis or uveitis • Botulism food poisoning • Dermatomyositis • Glanders • Hemophilus influenzae B • Keratoconus • Measles • Melioidosis • Meningococcal illness • Pneumococcal meningitis • Preeclampsia • Rabies • Reiter’s syndrome • Trichinosis • Viral meningitis • Western equine encephalitis
